Teen Problems With Parents

Some of the greatest challenges in parenting take place during your child's teenage years. In his book "The Power of Positive Parenting," Dr. Glen Latham says, "Without question, the most stressful years for parents are when their children are between 13 and 20." While experiences vary from one individual to the next, there are some problems many teenagers have in common regarding their relationship with their parents. Knowing what those problems are can help you and your teenager successfully navigate the transitional years between childhood and adulthood.

Training Teens To Be Respectful

Today more than ever, good manners are essential to professional success. Teach your teens the art of respect for others.

Respect is the foundation on which all healthy relationships should be built. From self-respect to respect for others, putting another person's needs ahead of their own is a productive first step for public behavior that can prepare teens for adulthood.

If your teen could use a few lessons in developing a respectful attitude, the following suggestions may help.

Teen Depression Causes

Researchers do not entirely understand the causes of teen depression, but have discovered some key factors involved. Usually it is not just one thing that triggers depression in teenagers, but a combination of some of the following factors:
  • One of the main causes of teen depression seems to be an imbalance of neurotransmitters, or chemicals that carry signals in the brain. Scientists are not sure what causes this imbalance, but this aspect of depression may be genetic.
  • Having a parent with depression increases the risk that a teen will have depression. Researchers are unsure whether this is due to genetic factors in depression or if actions or attitudes leading to depression may be learned by the teen of a depressed parent.
